Obituary

Elaine Vaticalos Mayo Frederick, our beautiful and beloved mother, stepmother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018, in the loving arms of her family after a brief and sudden illness. She was born on December 21, 1933 in Kilgore, Texas. From an early age she worked in her family's restaurant, the Bluebonnet Cafe, which catered to locals and oil workers alike. Upon graduating from Longview High School, she attended Kilgore Junior College and was a proud member of the famed Kilgore Rangerettes where her beauty and grace was enjoyed by many, including President Eisenhower at his first inauguration.

After assisting her first husband through dental school in Houston, her young family moved to Austin in 1958. In addition to full time mother and housewife, Elaine was active in many civic organizations, including President of the Auxiliary of the Downtown Lion's Club, Treasurer of the Laguna Gloria Art Museum. Public Relations Chair of Austin Civic Ballet (now Ballet Austin), and board member of the Paramount Theatre and Austin History Center, among others.

In 1967 Elaine became a single mother, and added full time employment to her busy schedule in order to provide for her two young children. While working at the Austin Arts Counsel (Laguna Gloria), she co-chaired the grand reopening of the Driskill Hotel. The two day event was so successful, she was hired as the Executive Director of the Heritage Society of Austin. She officed in the hotel she helped save and she served with distinction for 20 years alongside many outstanding people with whom she was privileged to associate.

Even though Elaine worked full-time while a single parent, she never missed any of her children's activities. Her love and support for her children was truly unconditional and selfless.

In 1994 she married longtime friend, Jim Frederick, whom she adored. Together they spent 10 years of fun and companionship until Jim's passing in 2003. She so appreciated the love and support she continued to receive from Jim's family, and was as proud of the accomplishments of her extended family as she was of her own.

She worked as a volunteer for the St. Anne's Guild of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and The Settlement Home until her failing eye sight and mobility restricted those endeavors. Despite her physical limitations, she continued working for the Settlement Home until last week, where her co-volunteers assisted her desire to remain active by graciously delivering items to her residence to be sorted and priced.

Elaine was a voracious reader, and when her eye sight failed her, she continued her passion by listening to books on tape. She was also an accomplished mahjongg player, which she somehow managed to continue enjoying despite her failing eye sight.

Elaine is preceded in death by her husband Jim, and her parents Opal and George Vaticalos. She is survived by her son George Mayo, daughter Stephanie Hearne and husband, Doug, her brothers Billy Vaticalos and Robert Vaticalos and their partners Cleburne McAlister and Don Schuster, step-children, Farrell and Kenneth Robertson, Sharon and Bo Frederick and Courtney Smith, grandchildren Brittney Ondreas, Vanessa Ondreas, Lauren Rivera, Baillie Hearne, Dodson Hearne, step-grandchildren Kaylea Budd, Reilly Purl, Carson Frederick, Jared Frederick, Kacie Frederick and Mackenzie Smith, as well as 7 great grandchildren, Jaxon, Max, Paige, Maise, Remi, Payten and Falen.

A memorial service in Elaine's honor will be held at 1:00 p.m on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Settlement Club, 1600 Payton Gin Road, Austin, Texas 78758 or Drive-A-Senior, c/o Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Blvd, Austin, Texas 78703.
