Eileen W. Patterson, 103, of Austin, Texas passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, March 17, 2017. She was born August 8, 1913, in Galveston, Texas, to Donald O. Wilson and Edna V. English Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 59 years, Woodrow (Woody) W. Patterson and her two brothers, Lawrence Wilson and Donald Wilson. She is survived by her sister Ruth E. Moore-Wilson, her six children, Carol Niemann (Larry), Don Patterson (Carroll), Kirk Patterson (Carol), Susan Johnson, Scott Patterson (Carolyn) and Connie Patterson (Alice), 12 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eileen graduated from UT Austin with a BBA in 1936. She was instrumental in pioneering efforts to expand special education programs in Austin ISD. Eileen was a long time member of Austin Woman's Club, a 70-year member of the University Ladies Club, a member of the Faculty Wives Club, Porcelain Arts Club, Austin Pallet Knife Club, Austin Lawyers Auxiliary, and Texas Lawyers Auxiliary. She was president of the Austin City Council of PTAs and actively participated in all of her children's local PTAs.
Eileen was a talented artist of multiple mediums, including enamel on copper, water colors, oil painting, and china painting. She decorated her home with hand painted kitchen and bathroom tiles, numerous painted lamps, chandeliers and plates, and an enamel-on-copper fireplace hood depicting the city view from her home.
Eileen and Woody enjoyed traveling. They took all 6 of their children to the 48 continental states, Mexico, and Canada, plus additional countries. They traveled to more than 100 countries. They both enjoyed bird hunting. Eileen survived a bite by a large rattlesnake. Woody killed, skinned the snake, and kept its rattlers.
There will be a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery Annex on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas at 201 East Ben White Boulevard, Austin, 78704, a local PTA of your choice, or a hospice or charity of your choice.
The family is grateful to Charlie's Angels Homecare Assistance, Austin Hospice, Grace Hospice, Roxi Tsakas, and Lynnda Weaver for their many years of caring for Eileen.
