Dorothy Lillian Morse Barnard, 95, a longtime St. David's Episcopal Church worker and retiree of The University of Texas at Austin, went to be with her Savior on Saturday, Jan.12, 2019.

A fourth generation Galvestonian, Dorothy was born Dec.17,1923, the daughter of Louise Catherine Ostermayer and Edward John Morse.

Dorothy graduated from Galveston's Ball High School in 1940. During her teenage years she was chosen "Miss Columbia" in the annual Galveston Oleander Boardwalk Festival. She married fellow Galvestonian Herbert Joseph Barnard Sr., in 1941. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and later started his lifelong career as a homebuilder.

While rearing their two children, Dorothy served as clergy secretary at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in La Marque, TX, where she also sang in the choir and served on the Altar Guild. In 1960 the family moved to Austin, where Dorothy worked for 20 years as an administrative assistant in the Departments of Germanic Languages and Linguistics at UT-Austin.

At St. David's Episcopal Church, Dorothy was a member of the Daughters of the King and also assisted Herb Sr. as he led children's worship services for 11 years. For five years, Dorothy baked birthday cakes decorated with "Jesus Loves Me" for each child in Sunday School and was awarded certificates of appreciation by the congregation.

Dorothy was regent for the Thankful Hubbard Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the early 1970s and was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists.

Dorothy loved The Lord Jesus and lived her life according to God's Word, sharing joy and kindness with her family and every one she met. She had a wonderful life and was greatly loved.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Sr., by her parents, and by a sister, Louise Morse McDonald of Galveston.

She is survived by her son, Herbert Joseph Barnard Jr., and wife, Alice Kaye (Bunny) Reynolds of Austin; her daughter Barbara Ann Barnard and husband Robert Hugh Banta, and a sister, Ethel Morse Walsh of Houston. Dorothy is also survived by five grandchildren: Christopher Barnard and wife Vanesa, Bryan Barnard and wife Sarah, and Scott Barnard and wife Megan, Lauren Banta Naylor and husband Rob, and Renee Banta Kilpatrick and husband Pete; 11 great-grandchildren: Aiden, Adrian; Lillian, William; Avery, Evan, Rhett Barnard; and Henry, Kate Naylor; Louise, Declan Kilpatrick. Survivors also include nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2019 in Sumner's Hall of historic St. David's Episcopal Church, 301 E. 8th St., with the funeral following at 11 a.m. Parking will be available in the garage between 7th and 8th streets at Trinity Street. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Dr.

Pallbearers are Christopher Barnard, Bryan Barnard, Scott Barnard, Rob Naylor, Pete Kilpatrick, Jory Lange, Aiden Barnard, and Adrian Barnard.
