Obituary for Donald Craig Babel

August 3, 1951 - December 24, 2017
Austin, Texas | Age 66

Donald Craig Babel of Austin passed away peacefully on December 24, 2017 surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Don was born August 3, 1951 in Houston to Jean and Walter Babel. He was a member of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, graduated from Lamar High School and was a member of the Ramal organization and tennis team. He enjoyed attending Camp Longhorn, water skiing, hunting, and many adventures at his great aunt and uncle's ranch in Eagle Lake, now the Attwater Prairie Chicken Preserve. He graduated from the University of Texas with a BBA in 1973 where he was on the Dean's List, and was an active member in the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. While at Texas, he met the love of his life, Cynthia Henneberger. After a whirlwind courtship of forty-three days, they became engaged, married, and have been inseparable for just shy of forty-three years.

Don was involved in commercial real estate and got his brokers license at the age of 21. After graduation, he worked for Texas Commerce Bank in Houston in their Officer Development Program. His desire to work in commercial real estate led him back to Austin, where he and Cindy raised their family.

Always passionate about home improvement and design, he volunteered as President of his Homeowners Association for 25 years. He was a member of Young Men's Business League, Leadership Austin, North Austin Rotary, Life Member of Texas Exes, West Austin Youth Association Board, The Bachelors of Austin, Westwood Country Club, and The Headliners Club.

Don never met a stranger and was kind and respectful to all. His cup was always full. His genuine, dependable, humble, and trustworthy character was lived out daily. He took pride in his ongoing projects around his home, ensuring that it was always his best work. A true gentleman, his family was an absolute joy in life. He loved every opportunity to be with his daughters and grandchildren in their endeavors, from coaching their sports to attending Longhorn football games together. He shared a passion for traveling with Cindy to various states and countries.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia Henneberger Babel, daughter Kaylea Claire Babel, her children Adalyn and Braydon of Austin, daughter Kathlyn Babel Lehner, her husband Andrew Lehner and their children Edward, Lynlea, and Thomas of Dallas, sister Karen Jean Babel of Plantersville, aunt Margaret Dahse Hunter of Waco, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Jean Dahse Babel, Walter Edgar Babel, Jr., and sister Janis Clare Babel, all of Houston.

The family express sincere gratitude to Dr. Demetrius Loukas and his staff for their endless support and heartfelt care. A service will be held at Tarrytown Methodist Church in Austin on Friday, December 29 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to The University of Texas Business School at Post Office Box 7458 Austin, Texas 78713, or a charity of one's choice.
