Obituary for Dolores Nan "Nancy" Polk Brady

August 10, 1925 - February 17, 2018
Austin, Texas | Age 92

Dolores Nan "Nancy" Polk Brady, age 92, passed away on February 17, 2018. The only child of S. Russell Polk and Dorothy Hufendick Polk, she was born in McAllen, Texas on August 10, 1925. Dolores spent the first eight years of her life in McAllen, passing many happy days with her grandparents in the house they had built at the edge of town and playing in the adjacent orchard.

When she was eight years old, she and her mother moved to Austin, where Dolores attended St. Mary's primary school. She graduated from the Academy of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, where she made lifelong friends from across Texas and the world.

She studied electrical engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, and then volunteered to enter training in aeronautical engineering at Iowa State University as part of the WWII effort. That engineering background led her to work at Curtiss-Wright in St. Louis, Missouri, then later at Brown and Root in Houston and Bell Telephone in Austin.

Dolores met her husband, Jesse John Brady, Jr., in September 1945, and they were married in Austin at St. Mary's Cathedral on June 1, 1946. Together they raised four children—Margaret, John III, Susan, and Dorothy—in their Travis Heights home. Dolores was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and was active in the Parent-Teacher Association of its primary school in the 1950s and '60s.

Dolores was a proud member of the Chickasaw tribe, and instilled in her children appreciation and respect for their Native American heritage. She was an expert seamstress, delighting her daughters with the beautiful clothes she created for them, as well as embroidery and intricate quilts. Dolores had a soft heart toward all animals, and was a loving caretaker of many pets over the years.

She especially loved the study of genealogy, and was an early adopter of the Macintosh computer as a tool for genealogical research and record keeping. As a longtime member of the Austin Genealogical Society, Dolores spent countless hours with friends researching at the Austin History Center, the Texas State Library and Archives, and online. She enjoyed helping acquaintances from across the country trace their ancestry, bringing to light their family details discovered in local archives and on the internet.
Dolores is survived by her husband, Jesse John Brady, Jr., of Austin, Texas; half-sisters, Janey Dutnell of McAllen, Texas and Nancy Polk McLarry of Boerne, Texas; children, Margaret Brady of Salt Lake City, Utah; John Brady III and his wife Karen Watkins, of Austin, Texas; Susan Brady and her husband Mark Loeffler, of North Haven, Connecticut; and Dorothy Brady of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren, Edward Stanley of San Francisco, California, and Kathryn Stanley of Seattle, Washington.
