Obituary

Curtis Willard Jones, 86, of Austin, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. He was born on July 22, 1931, on his family's farm in Gretna, Virginia. After graduating from Renan High School, Curtis served in the United States Air Force as a military police officer for two years, mainly in Alaska. He met his wife, Monie Kathryn Bell Jones, while stationed at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. Their 62nd wedding anniversary was on May 28, 2018.

Curtis graduated from Southern Technical Institute in Atlanta with a degree in electrical technology. He started his career as an engineer at Lockheed in Atlanta. He moved his family to Clearwater, Florida, to work at General Electric, then to Richardson, Texas, to take advantage of an opportunity at Collins Radio. In 1970, the family moved to Austin, where Curtis worked for APC Industries, Inc., Data General, and Lockheed Martin, where he finished his career.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, gardening, and watching sports on TV, especially baseball. If anything broke at his house or on his car, he could always figure out the problem and fix it. He was a Boy Scout leader and coached his sons' baseball teams.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Monie Kathryn Bell Jones; children Curtis Willard Jones, Jr. of Austin, Michael Loy Jones of Ormond Beach, Florida; Monie Jones Rainer (Rob) of Austin, and Phillip Lawrence Jones of Austin; grandchildren Alan, Daniel, Nathan, Samuel and Alisha Jones; Delaine Schaper and Christopher Jones; Adam, Aaron and Alex Rainer; great grandchildren Colin, Noah, Emma and Riley; sisters Delma Scott of Lynchburg, Virginia, Lois Atkinson of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Betty Jean Edwards of Davidson, North Carolina; brothers-in law Darrell Bell (Marlene) of Monticello, Georgia, and Richard Bell (Myra) of Newnan, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allie C. and Mary Doss Jones; brothers Herman, Elwood, Abner and Sidney; sister Naomi Jones, five infant siblings, and daughter-in-law Lisa Day Jones.

Special thanks to our brother Phillip, who dedicated himself to helping our mother with Dad's care during his battle with dementia, and caregivers Elsie, Myrtle, Blessing and Esphan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Austin's Christopher House or St. John's United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18 at St. John's United Methodist Church, 2140 Allandale Road, Austin, Texas, with a reception immediately following. Burial is scheduled at 3:00 p.m. at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive.
