Obituary

Clementine (Claire) Novak was born November 23, 1917 in Flushing, Queens, New York to Stanislaus and Helen (Cybulska) Kecmer. She attended St. Adalbert Elementary School in Elmhurst and Flushing High School. On September 27, 1936 she married George H. Novak at St. Adalbert Church. Together they lived their married life for 56 years in Flushing, North Branford CT, Chicago, and North Haven CT. They were blessed with two daughters, Barbara and Carol Ann (deceased).

Clementine was a homemaker. She did defense work during WWII while her husband served with the U.S. Army in Europe. She wrote him every day. She enjoyed and excelled at bowling, gardening, fishing in Long Island Sound off Canarsie, baking Polish paczki for her grandchildren, needle crafts, and playing cards, especially pinochle. There was never a card game she would refuse, playing into the night with friends, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She often won, but with a graciousness that encouraged at least one more game.

After George died, Clementine lived for 10 years in their home in North Haven. She was active with North Haven seniors groups and with the Daughters of St. Isabela at Mt Carmel Catholic Church. In 2002, she moved to Texas to live with her daughter and son-in-law, where she continued to garden, play cards, travel the Texas hill country, write letters to far flung family members, and bake scrumptious apple pies. She spent her final months at Brookdale-Spicewood Springs, where she died on November 1, 2017, twenty-two days short of her 100th birthday. She will have a funeral mass at St Austin Church on November 22 and be interred in a family plot with her husband, her daughter Carol and her parents at Mt. St. Mary Cemetery in Flushing.

She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Eugene) Feit; three grandchildren, David Feit, Sarah (Mark) Williams of Durango Colorado, and Rachel (Todd) Moye of Ft Worth Texas; and five great-grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Feit of Trinity University in San Antonio Texas, Luke and Henry Moye, and Margaret and Ben Williams. She is predeceased by her husband (1992), daughter (1981), sister Helen Roberts, and her beloved cousins. All of them loved her very much and will always remember her faithfulness, gaiety, warmth and generosity.

The family is grateful for the care she received by the residence and skill nursing staff at Brookdale retirement community and for the warmth shown her by its residents.
