Obituary

Long-time Austin resident, Evelyn Elizabeth (Bette) Struble Bown, died on October 31, 2017 at age 94. Born on October 4, 1923 in Denver, Colorado, Bette was the daughter of Howard and Christine Struble. She was a graduate of South High School in Denver. Bette met her future husband, Oliver H. Bown, while working at J.C. Penny's Department Store.

Bette and Ollie were married in 1943, and soon moved to New York where he attended Midshipman School at Columbia University, just prior to his Navy service on the Bon Homme Richard aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theater of WWII.

Bette, Ollie and their children attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church until the number of non-student members became so large that it was time to start a new mission church. For almost a year, services were held in Bette's welcoming living room, culminating in the establishment of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Westlake Hills. As one of its first families, and as members of the vestry for the original mission church, they helped to build the pews and altar at the new building on Bee Caves Road. Through the church, she was a volunteer at the State School, the Confederate Home, and the Head Start Program at Palm School. It was a great source of pride that St. Michael's eventually expanded to become the cathedral it is today.

During the 1960's, Bette served for six years on the school board for the Eanes Independent School District, helping to take the small country school at Westlake Hills' first new elementary school. The foresight of that Board became the foundation for one of the most extraordinary school systems in the country.

Bette is survived by her children; J. Michael Bown (Terry), Jennifer L. Bown Keogh (Reggie), Kathleen A. Bown Duck (Tom), and Kimberly A. Bown Pugh (Gary), her 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. All of them loved her because she gave a deeper meaning to being a mother and set the highest standard for "Grand" and "Great Grand". She loved us all with complete acceptance and continuous kindness. She is predeceased by her parents, Christine and Howard Struble, and her brothers James and Charles Struble, Her beloved husband, Oliver H. Bown, passed away in 1995.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home.
