Obituary

Bess Simmons was born September 10, 1928, to Nina Floy Phillips and Harold Edwin Brooks, delivered by her grandfather, Dr. William Frederick Brooks, in Clarksville, Texas. The fourth of eight children, she grew up in Bagwell, Texas, attended Clarksville High School, Paris Junior College, North Texas State University, and the University of Texas at Austin.

Bess worked at various jobs, from telephone operator in Brooklyn NY to home demonstration agent in rural East Texas, photo sales rep for Olan Mills along the bayous of Louisiana, and classified advertisement rep at the Austin American Statesman. She loved children and babies which led to her study of early childhood education at UT and to a blind date with Galen Simmons. The two married on March 24, 1962 and lived in the hill country West of Austin, thereafter. When she married, Bess gained not just a husband, but also a son, Steve. The family expanded in 1964 to include daughter, Sandy. Bess was a loving mother, known for encouragement of creativity and pursuit of fun more than for her disciplinary skills.

Later in life, Bess was an active participant in her church and particularly in the Crib Quilt Ministry. She served in a number of capacities, including as greeter to a mother and toddler group where she was assisted by her pet and constant companion, Buffy Boy.

After a successful first battle with ovarian cancer, Bess experienced a recurrence and passed from this life on May 13. She is survived by daughter Sandy and son-in-law Brooks, son Steve and daughter-in-law Mary Ellen, grandson Ted, four siblings: Ed Brooks, Pat Birdwell, John Brooks, and Brenda Collins; three siblings-in-law: Norma Brooks, Robyn Whyte, and Rob Collins, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family.

A service is planned for Saturday, May 20 at 1 pm in the lobby of Building D at Austin Ridge Bible Church, 9300 Bee Caves Road, Austin, TX. A dessert and beverage reception will follow. Interment will be at Memorial Hill Cemetery.
