The Kinney's are an old Austin and Johnson City family. Barbara graduated from the original Austin High School, and then attended the University of Texas where she met Harold D. (HD) Shockley of Mart, Texas. They were married in 1947 in Austin at the Texas Federation of Women's Club building while still attending UT.

Barbara and HD then moved to San Antonio in 1949 where HD worked in the Texas Highway Department as a civil engineer. They then moved to Houston in 1953 when HD joined the private highway construction industry for the balance of his career. Barbara and HD had two sons in Houston. One was born in 1957, Cleve, and the other was born in 1962, David. While in Houston, Barbara and HD enjoyed attending the Oilers football, Astros baseball and Rockets basketball games. They also both loved the Houston Rodeo. Barbara especially loved the beach and going to Galveston.

Barbara and HD moved back to Austin in 1997 upon HD's retirement. Barbara and HD enjoyed traveling and had many fond memories of Hong Kong, Paris, London, Germany, Italy, Spain, Israel, African safaris and Alaskan landscapes. HD passed away in 2009 at the age of 84. Barbara and HD were married 62 years and loved to dance.

Barbara enjoyed music greatly. She played the guitar and piano as well as wrote songs. She especially enjoyed writing country music. She was a long-term member of the ASCAP songwriter's association in Nashville. One of her songs, "Walls Instead of Bridges", was commercially published by the singer Ferlin Husky in 1974 on his album "Champagne Ladies and Blue Ribbon Babies".
