Obituary

Banks Burke (Mac) McAnally passed from this life on May 19, 2017, just one week short of his 63rd birthday, following a long battle with cancer. Mac was that rarest of breeds, a native Austinite. He is survived by his father, Robert W. McAnally and step-mother, Helen McAnally of Fort Worth, Texas. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ellen Ponz and his brother, Sky McAnally.

Mac was a graduate of Austin High School. He also graduated from Austin Community College with an Associate's Degree in Electronics, and attended the University of Texas. He retired from 3M Corporation in early 2014, following a 35 year career with the company. His last years with the company were in the Telecommunications Group providing quality assurance support and finalizing equipment engineering specifications and documentation using CAD tools. His work for 3M was a great source of personal pride.

Two of Mac's favorite hobbies were dancing and making home improvements. He was a perfectionist in the execution of his projects, which ranged from his custom designed water and solar power collection systems to his custom closet installations and tile work. His long-time friend, companion and dance partner, Lynn Belton, was the grateful recipient of many of his home repair skills over the course of their relationship.

Mac was a volunteer dance instructor at the Heart of Texas Whip & West Coast Swing Dance Club for over a decade. He loved all types of dancing, including ballroom and country-western dancing, but his passion was whip style swing dancing, which he danced to his favorite music, old style R&B. He worked consistently on compiling several large playlists of R&B music for use in DJ'ing dances. Many beginning dancers profited from his instruction over the years and his life was immensely enriched by his many friends and acquaintances from the Austin dance community.

Mac was a quiet, kind, and modest man and a good friend. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Family visitation for Mac will be held on Wednesday, May 24th , 2017 from 6-8pm at the Weed-Corley-Fish north location at 3125 North Lamar. A graveside service is scheduled for 11:30 AM on Thursday, May 25th at Austin Memorial Park located at 2800 Hancock Drive. Friends are invited to attend both.

The family wishes to thank all of Mac's friends who supported him throughout his long illness. They also request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mac's memory to either the Lung Cancer Alliance or Habitat for Humanity.
