Obituary for Arthur "Bernie" William Bernhard

March 5, 1930 - July 22, 2017
Westlake Hills, Texas | Age 87

Arthur "Bernie" William Bernhard, 87, passed away on July 22, 2017 in Austin, Texas. Bernie was born on March 5, 1930 in Harper, Texas to Arthur W. Bernhard and Gertrude Lang Bernhard. Upon graduation from Fredericksburg High School, Bernie enlisted in the United States Navy on September 6, 1950. On leave between the completion of basic training and onset of active duty, he returned to Fredericksburg, Texas to marry his high school sweetheart, EmmaLee Weber on June 28, 1952. Bernie completed four years of active duty at the naval base in San Diego, California. EmmaLee joined him, and they lived together in off-base housing, creating lasting memories of their early years as a young married couple. Upon completion of his four years of active duty on July 6, 1954, Bernie immediately "re-enlisted" as a Naval reservist, continuing to serve his country with once weekly evening duties, ready for more if called. Bernie retired from service with the US Navy on March 5, 1990, with 34 years, 4 months, and 27 days of service.

In 1954, Bernie and EmmaLee returned to their central Texas roots, making Austin their home. In Austin, they raised their children and enjoyed their lifetime partnership in the home they built and moved into in the winter of 1958. Bernie deeply mourned EmmaLee's passing in June 2012, but continued living in and maintaining the Bernhard's Austin home. In August 2015, Bernie joined a new community of friends at The Belmont Village in Westlake Hills. He was an active member of that community until his passing.

Bernie began his employment history with the University of Texas at Austin, progressing through employment with various State of Texas agencies. He retired from state employment after serving as the Director of Accounting for four of Texas' Governors. While dedicated to his job, he readily participated in day-to-day family activities and interests. His priority was his family; providing them with a better life than he experienced as a child was his primary focus. He and EmmaLee planned activities and vacations that addressed the family as a unit, and included weekend trips for extended family gatherings. He willingly volunteered for his children's projects and activities.

Bernie is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and wife.

He is survived by his children, Beth Bernhard (Austin) and Mark Bernhard, M.D. (Ft. Worth), daughter-in-law, Marla Bernhard (Ft. Worth), his grandchildren, Lauren Bernhard (Oklahoma) and Mark Alex Bernhard (Oklahoma), his brothers-in-law, Fred Klein (Fredericksburg) and Michael Weber (Ft. Worth). Other survivors include numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Family and friends are invited to join in commemoration of his life to be held at The Assumption Cemetery Chapel Mausoleum at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 27, 2017 with Reverend Sang Quan, St. John Neumann's, officiating.

Family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00 am.
