Tribute & Message From The Family

Edna Widen Whitworth passed away peacefully on December 27, 2018 surrounded by family and friends. She was a lifetime resident of Austin, born the middle daughter of Edna and Carl Widen on December 30, 1922 two blocks from the Texas State Capitol in a house that still stands.

Edna attended Pease Elementary, Allen Junior High and Stephen F. Austin High School before attending Mary Baldwin College in Virginia, then transferring to and graduating from The University of Texas at Austin.

On August 23, 1943, she married Harry Philip Whitworth before he went to WWII as an officer in the US Navy. Edna was the mother of four children, Harry Philip "Flip" Whitworth Jr. (Suzie), Gary Widen Whitworth, Ann Whitworth Messer (Bill) and Julie Whitworth Moore (Roy). She is survived by six grandchildren, Scott Whitworth (Lisle), Ashley Stich (Mark), Will Messer (Brooke), Andrew Messer, JuliAnn Nixon and Megan Moore. She had five great grandchildren, Rhett Whitworth, Wesley Whitworth, William Messer, Macon Messer and Emma Lathi.

A fabulous cook, Edna will be remembered for hosting countless dinners at her home. As a life master in bridge and as a Charles Goren certified bridge teacher, she enjoyed a lifetime of competitive and social bridge games. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and countless friends and family of all ages.

The family would like to thank her caregivers for their love and compassion. The family will host a celebration of her life on January 6 and there will be a private family burial at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Edna's memory to the Andrew Philip Messer Lectureship. Mail checks to BSW Central Texas Foundation, 2401 South 31st Street, Temple, Texas 76508.
