Condolence & Memory Journal

Ruby, Jack, Ellen, and families: In 1978 my girlfriend and I left Iowa and moved to the Quinlan Park community on Steiner Ranch where I lived for the next quarter century. There, I met four colorful Texas men that (in my opinion) "ran the Ranch". Most everything on the ranch was either built by, owned by, or rented by one of these gentlemen. 1) Bill Crawford (my 1st landlord) 2) Jack Mixon (I bought his house on W. Lakeland) 3) Henry Chowning (his family became my close neighbors, literally) and 4) John Oates (became my back door neighbor and his son Jay became my friend). With John's passing I feel that its the end of an era; they're all gone now but each left their mark in history. I enjoyed every minute of living in the community on the ranch and wouldn't change a thing. Well, maybe a few. Last summer while preparing to sell my house on West Lakeland, I was lucky to run into John's son, Jack. Wow, no doubt who his daddy is! He looks so much like his dad! As my mind says goodbye to John, I can't help but think of his son Jay who left us too soon. Jay, I hope you have your projects finished in heaven because your Dad is on his way!

Ruby, my prayers for you and family. John was a good friend, and I have many fond memories. We have lost a good man here on earth and heaven has gained one.

Condolences and prayers for the family. My parents, W.D. and Miriam Morton were friends with John and Ruby. I recall many Christmas' seeing them when they would come to Stinnett and also going to Austin and staying at their home and at the lake.
