Thomas H. Flinn, III departed this life on 17 February 2008. A fifth generation Texan, he was born to Thomas H. and Margaret Annie Bowden Flinn on January 30, 1922 in Hutto, Texas. The following year the family moved to Austin where his maternal ancestors settled in 1849. He worked his way through Austin High School changing the artwork at the Paramount, State, and Queen Theatres. After graduating high school in 1939, Tom entered the University of Texas during which time he worked in the State Senate and for the American National Bank. He left the University at the start of World War II to enlist in the Army Air Corps where he served with the 6th Combat Cargo Squadron in the Philippines, Okinawa and in the Occupation of Japan. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. Tom returned to the University where he worked with the State Board of Insurance Commissioners before graduating with a degree in Business Administration in 1949. He later graduated from The Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and relocated to Richmond, Virginia. There he spent the majority of his business career in the Investment and Banking businesses while also lecturing at the Graduate School of Consumer Banking at the University of Virginia. He retired his position as Senior Vice President, Investments and Corporate Treasurer of United Virginia Bankshares in 1984. Tom then returned to Texas where he worked as a Bank Management Consultant. He also served as Interim President and CEO of a Suburban Bank, and as a Chairman of the Board and CEO of another. Tom was an active churchgoer and served as a Deacon and Elder at Second Presbyterian Church in Richmond. Most recently, he was a member of the Lakeway Church. He also was a 50 plus year member of the Ben Hur Shrine Temple, the Austin Scottish Rite Bodies, and Hill City Masonic Lodge 456. An amateur Genealogist and History Buff he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Republic of Texas, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Texas Navy Association and the Clan Chisholm Society of North America. Tom was also an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He also raised cattle on his small ranch on Doublehorn Creek outside of Marble Falls, Texas. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 60 years Ann Atwood Flinn; a daughter Mary Kathleen, her husband Ron Finley and their two sons Jeremy and Joshua; his eldest son Michael Hance; and a younger son Mark Thomas and his wife Terrie their sons, William and Trevor and stepson Colin Felch. He also leaves two sisters, Ann Erdman and Marilyn Freund, and their husbands, along with numerous nephews and nieces. Throughout his life many people cherished him and called him "Friend". Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 21, 2008 on the family plot at Hutto Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Lakeway Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lakeway Church Foundation, 2203 Lakeway Blvd, Lakeway, TX 78734 and/or to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd, Ste 100, Austin, TX 78759.
