Ebbie Neptune of Austin/Westlake, Texas passed away at Legends Oaks Healthcare on June 22, 2012 while surrounded by his loved ones. He was 73 years of age. Ebbie was born May 14th, 1939 to Virginia and Everett, Sr. in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

His family moved to Sweeny, Texas in 1948, when his dad went to work for Phillips Petroleum. Upon graduation from high school in 1957, he attended Texas Lutheran College (TLC) in Seguin, Texas on a football scholarship. It was here that he met his devoted bribe-to-be, Mary Sue Pinckney of Austin, Texas, while she was attending nearby Southwest Texas State University. They were married on August 22nd, 1959 at Saint Austin's Catholic Church in Austin, Texas.

Upon Graduation from TLC, Ebbie began his coaching career. He had early on stints in La Feria, Pleasanton, and Sweeny. While at Sweeny, he was the assistant coach to Kenneth Dabbs. In 1966, their team won the Texas UIL Class 2A (now 3A) Championship. In 1969, Ebbie went to Westlake with Coach Dabbs to become the very first coaches of a program that has gone on to become one of the most successful in the state of Texas. He was the offensive coordinator and then both Head Coach and Athletic Director 1982 to 1986. During his tenure, his teams compiled a record of 39-17-1 with his teams reaching the playoffs in 1982, 1984, and 1985. His 1985 team of 12-2-1 lost in a tie to Sweetwater on penetrations in the semi-finals. Ebbie was elected Centex Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1985.

In 1987, Ebbie became the first-time-ever full time Athletic Director (AD) for Westlake and the Eanes Independent School District. While serving for 22 years as the AD, he took great pride in stressing an athletic program which offered many opportunities for young people to participate and build a strong self image. During this time, Westlake won 19 UIL State Championships and numerous district and state honors. In 2002, Westlake was awarded the UIL Lone Star Cup Award, which recognizes the best athletic and academic programs in the State of Texas. In 2004, he was inducted into the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Honor. In 2009, he was given the Texas Lutheran Fighting Heart Award, after which, the award was renamed The Ebbie Neptune Fighting Heart Award. Ebbie retired from Westlake in July of 2003.

One of Ebbie's most honored and cherished moments (both professionally and personally) was on September 6th, 2002. The Eanes School Board named their new football field "The Ebbie Neptune Field" in recognition of his longtime service and dedication to both school and community. Other honors and awards to come were the Greater Austin Chapter of National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Award, the naming to the All Time Sweeny Football Team, and the adoption of a resolution by the State of Texas House of Representatives by Speaker Tom Craddick to mention a few.

For over 40 years as a coach, his work is most recognized and visible in the thousands of young men and women's lives whom he helped mold and positively influence. No award is big enough for this contribution that he has made to so many.

Ebbie's survivors are: his wife of 52 years, Mary Sue; his two daughters, Rebecca Neptune Gibson and Elizabeth Neptune Dodge; his two sons-in-law, S. Scott Gibson and Todd Russell Dodge; his six grandchildren, Amanda Gibson Gahan, Allison Gibson Schmid, Everett Neptune Gibson, Grant Neptune Gibson, Todd Riley Dodge, and Molly Sue Dodge; his three great grandchildren, Luke Gibson Gahan, Benjamin Gibson Schmid, and Audrey Claire Gahan; his grandsons-in-laws, Brian J. Gahan and William H. Schmid; his sisters, Linda Smith and Diane Krafka; his brothers-in-law, John M. Pinckney, III and Roger W. Pinckney, Sr. and along with their respective wives Janice and Cathy; and his nieces and nephews, Stephanie Smith Derrick, Laura Krafka Barrios, Rachel Krafka Suiter, Charles Everett Krafka, and Katherine Krafka Maloy, Kemper Pinckney Carillio, John M Pinckney, IV, Roger W. Pinckney, Jr., Thomas S. Pinckney.

Ebbie also leaves behind a host of beloved other family members, friends, and colleagues who so admired his loyalty, his bravery, his loving concern for others, his humor, his sports tales, and most of all, his love of God.

Special thanks to the Bulldog fans, friends, and families from Sweeny and Texas Lutheran College, as well as to the Westwood and Westlake neighbors who were so faithful throughout our journey.

Finally, a very special thanks and appreciation to Margarita Biddy and Jackie McClellan who gave such loving care and devotion to Ebbie in his final years, and doctors William Deaton, Michael Watkins, David Phillips, Michael Floyd, John Williamson, Mark Lindsay, John Frederick, Sara Westgate, David Harris, Bryan Koopman, Brad Theriot, Peggy Russell, Michelle and Wendy, and all the staff at Legends Oaks Healthcare in Kyle, TX. To all of them we will be forever grateful for their care and compassion.

Visitation from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 25th at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church, located at 5455 Bee Caves Road, followed by a Rosary service. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26th, Saint John Neumann Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park, located at 2800 Hancock Drive.

He even got me into Westlake's summer basketball camp one year and let me stay with him and Aunt Mary Sue. That was the first time I was ever on a plane and it was an awesome experience!
