Velma Jordan died on June 9, 2011 at her home in Austin, Texas. Velma was born on August 10, 1912, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Henry and Augusta Kohlmeyer. She graduated from high school there and after moving to Texas attended the University of Texas.

Velma married Dr. Robbie C. Jordan in 1938 and they were blessed with two children, Jane and John. After Dr. Jordan's service in the army during World War II, they moved to Mineral Wells, Texas, where they lived until 1959 at which time they moved to Austin.

Velma had a passion for tennis and played competitively until 1990. She organized the Austin Women's Tennis Association in 1960. She gave a great deal of her time to volunteering, especially reading for the Recording for the Blind at St. David's Hospital. She was also an avid duplicate bridge player.

She began traveling to Europe in 1966, often with groups from the University of Texas, Hollins College and Baylor University. She was an active member of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd and was blessed by the fellowship and friendship of the congregation and her many close friends who were a source of joy to her.

Velma was predeceased by her son, John R. Jordan, M.D. and her husband, Robbie C. Jordan, M.D. She is survived by her daughter, Jane Lacy of San Antonio, her nephew, Steve Shearer and his family, and her niece, Maxine Greenler.

Visitation will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar Blvd., on Friday, June 10, 2011 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., with graveside services on Saturday, June 11, at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service in gratitude for her life will be on August 10 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 2:00 p.m.
